TEAR STAINS
Many different breeds of dogs and cats have Tear staining. This is when their
eyes water, which causes stains on their fur. The medical term is Epiphora. The
tear stains are unsightly and may cause irritation to your pet. The staining can
cause a smell and also be a breeding ground for bacteria or yeast.

The brownish red stains due to tear pigments are hard to get rid of. Tear staining
can be traced to genetics, diet and the health of your pet. The following are some
helpful tips for improving your chances of having a tear stain free pet.

Keep your pet’s eyes clean: Keep fur clipped from the eye area. Long hair can
irritate your pet’s eyes and cause eye watering or infection. Check their eye
lashes. Eyelashes can grow in abnormal angles and rub the eye. Check for dust in
your pet’s eyes and dried tears. Keep shampoo out of your pet’s eyes. Anything
foreign to the eye is likely to cause irritation and staining. If you’re pet has tear
staining. Use a warm damp cloth and gently wipe your pet’s eye area daily.

Hygiene: Wash your hands before touching around the eye area. Keep knots and
matt’s out of your pets coat and wash them regularly. Brush your pet frequently.

Pet Diet: Check to see what is in the food you are feeding your pet. Check for
artificial food colorings (dyes), artificial food additives and preservatives. Some
cereals such as wheat can cause pet allergies.
Water minerals can also cause tear staining. Use bottles water of filtered water for
your pet.

Pet Health:  Have your pet check regularly by your veterinarian. For ear mites, ear
infection, gum infection, common yeast or bacterial infections of the eye, and for
clogged tear ducts.
